John Sidney McCain III
A photo of John Sidney McCain III - son and grandson of 4 star admirals in the U.S. Navy.
He attended the United States Naval Academy (graduating, as he joked, 5th from the bottom in his class in 1958 - he was a bit of a rebel) and after graduation became a naval aviator. In 1967, he requested combat duty and was assigned to an aircraft carrier in the Gulf in Tonkin. On October 26, 1967 his plane was shot down and he became a prisoner of war.
After 5 and a half years as a prisoner of war and being severely tortured, John was released. The physical effects of his torture lasted the rest of his life.
In the early 1980s, he entered politics in the state of Arizona, eventually becoming a U.S. Senator. While he was nominated for President by the Republican Party in 2008, he lost the race to Democrat Barack Obama. He remained the senior Senator from Arizona until his death from brain cancer in 2018.

Rita Hayworth, World War Two
A photo of Rita Hayworth campaigning for the recycling of scrap metal in World War Two.
A large part of the home front war effort in World War Two was saving scrap metal that could be recycled into weapons for the war (also used for ships and aircraft). The caption on this photo from the National Archives says that Rita Hayworth "sacrificed her bumpers for the duration" (of the war). Rita Hayworth was a big movie star at the time and she also helped sell war bonds - her two younger brothers were both in the War. Most of Hollywood was involved in the war effort, either through promoting home front campaigns such as Victory Gardens, buying war bonds, rationing, or collecting scrap metal, or by service in the War overseas.
Margarita Carmen Cansino was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1918. She changed her name to Rita Hayworth for the stage and eventually was named one of the top 25 female motion picture stars of all time. Married and divorced 5 times (once to Orson Wells), her life was plagued with alcoholism. Later in life, she was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and died at the age of 68 in 1987.

Amelia Earhart - 120th Birthday
A photo of Amelia Earhart, born 120 years ago today on July 24th, 1897. Amelia Mary Earhart was not only an aviation trailblazer and author, but was also a pioneer who challenged gender stereotypes. During her 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe with navigator Fred Noonan, she was presumed lost and never found. But new evidence - including information from the National Archives (as well as a photo) - persuasively suggests that she landed in the Marshall Islands and was taken prisoner by the Japanese, dying 2 years later on Saipan.
One of Amelia Earhart's most famous flights, the 1928 transatlantic flight that began on June 17th 1928 and lasted 20 hours and 40 minutes has an interesting story. As Amelia was actually a last minute replacement for Amy Phipps Guest, she had not had any training on the particular type of plane that was used (one that relied on specific instrumentation to fly). Therefore pilot Wilmer Stultz flew with her to 'document flying time', however, ended up piloting the plane the entire length of the trip. Once the team landed in Wales Amelia was quoted as saying "Stultz did all the flying—had to. I was just baggage, like a sack of potatoes."
In 1932, Amelia Earhart set off alone, at the age of 34, from Newfoundland to a pasture in Culmore, Northern Ireland. She had intended to mimic Charles Lindbergh's solo flight to Paris but had run into major complications along the way.
Amelia had multiple flights during her career - all of which pushed the limits and were aimed to break long standing records which (men) had accomplished. With her celebrity status, Amelia constantly focused on gender equality, showing that women could obtain the same objectives as men.
