John Edwards
About me:
I am interested in my ancestors, knew very few of them. I am researching books I am writing about my uncle-a B-24 bombardier in WW II, my mom, my artist-musician brother Rob, and my ship. I wrote a book about my dad and his publications.
I was in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident on the USS Ticonderoga in Vietnam, and spent 4.5 years in the Navy. Got a BA at UCLA and MS in Environmental Engineering at USC.
I was an engineer then deputy director of engineering for the US Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. Won a White House award for developing clean rockets. At 50 took up dance for exercise and won 3 tv dance shows (one paid $100K, one with my son and one with J Lo) and in 2 Michael Jackson videos. Retired, have 2 grown children, currently traveling and writing.

William Burwell Edwards of Anniston, Alabama United States was born on June 21, 1915 in Anniston, and died at age 28 years old on June 13, 1944 in International Waters.
Son of Mrs. Virginia Edwards, he grew up in Los Angeles, California at a rented duplex at 915 S. Lucerne and had a brother, Richard Harbin Edwards who was two years younger.
Bill, or "Son" as he was also called, attended Los Angeles High School and UCLA where he "Majored in Sorority and minored in Fraternity." His cousin Virginia said he showed her LA night life and knew all the band members and the latest dance steps. He was 6 feet tall, weighed 195 had blue eyes, blond hair and resembled the movie star, Van Johnson.
William, a Second Lieutenant, served as the Bombardier on B-24D Liberator tail #42-72811, 64th Bombardment Squadron, 43rd Bombardment Group (Heavy), 5th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Forces, Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.
B-24D #42-72811 took off, with a crew of 11 from Nadzab Airfield, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea and staged from Mokerang in the Admiralty Islands on a strike mission to Yap Island, Caroline Islands, Micronesia. Other B-24's reported B-24D #42-72811 as bursting into flames and crashing into the sea near the equator on route to Yap.
William was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart. Service # O-688325
He also has a memorial brick at the Wayfarer's Chapel (Glass Church) in Palos Verdes, CA and at Veteran's Park in Redondo Beach, CA.

Dick was born in Carrizozo, NM. His father, Dr. William B. Edwards was an MD who contracted Tuberculosis and had to go to a high elevation. His father died in 1918 when Dick was not one year old. He was raised by his mother, Virginia Edwards, and grandmother, Bessie Edwards. He had one brother, William Burwell Edwards who was two years older.
The family moved to Los Angeles. Dick attended Los Angeles High School where he skipped a grade. He went on to UCLA where he earned a degree in mathematics, then to CalTech in mathematics and physics and to Illinois Institute of Technology where he earned a Ph.D. in mathematics. In Chicago he met his wife, Polly Edwards.
He worked for Goodyear designing controls for blimps in Ohio, then for the Navy on weapons during WW II. He worked at Hughes Aircraft Company as a senior scientist on space programs and was credited by the program manager of the Surveyor program for saving the first moon lander due to his analysis of the fuel system. He later became a professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). While there he continued to consult at Hughes.
He died of lung cancer in 1993 and is survived by his wife, Polly, sons John Richard Edwards, Robert William Edwards, David James Edwards, and daughter Christine Elizabeth Edwards. He also had six grand children, Rob Gerson, Jesse James Edwards, Roxanna Monika Edwards, Darwin Qmars Edwards, Mark Edwards, and Elizabeth Edwards. He was buried at sea off the coast of Palos Verdes by two of his sons.
