2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!

Macy's Santa Claus, 1942
Santa Claus at Macy's New York in 1942. He is skinnier here than we know him now - but this photo reminds me of Miracle on 34th Street. It's my favorite Christmas movie and was made only 5 years after this photo was taken, so the movie was probably pretty representative of the times.
Just like today, the kids got a piece of candy and told Santa what they wanted.

Richard E. Mateyko
Richard E. Mateyko as Santa Claus: This photo was taken in Calumet City, Il in the early 1950's when I was a student at Lincoln School, which is the elementary school across the street from where we lived. I know that my mother, Madge (Berilla) Mateyko made this costume. It must have been for a school play.

Santa Claus, aka Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Sinterklaas, Père Noël, Babbo Natale, Pelznickel, Topo Gigio and many other names, provides joy and presents to children around the world on Christmas.
It is believed that the legend of Santa Claus can be traced back to a monk named St. Nicholas who was born around 280 A.D. in Patara, Turkey. St. Nicholas had inherited wealth and gave away much (if not all) of his inheritance to the poor and suffering.
There are numerous stories of the impact of his kindness, and over the years he earned a reputation of being a protector of children. He died on December 6th and each year on his death traditions held that it was a particularly lucky day to make large purchases or get married.
Santa became popular in American traditions around the founding of the United States of America when a settlement of Dutch families gathered to honor the anniversary of St. Nicholas' death. By the early 1800s, and in particular by 1820, stores began to advertise Christmas shopping.

Santa Claus Label, 1868
A label featuring Santa Claus for Sugar Plums by the U.S. Confection Company, New York, in 1868.
The label was entered into the Clerk's Office in the district of Southern New York. It's an interesting use of Santa for advertising in the mid 1800's. The image is familiar but has changed somewhat since then!
