  • Obituary

SUNDAY, JANUARY 16, 2022 B9 JOHNSON, Rachel A., born March 30, 1926, passed away on January 10, 2022. Born in Danville, Va. to Willie Garbee and Thomas Aherron; Rachel was predeceased by nine siblings. After graduating from high school in Danville, she applied for a job with Western Union and chose to work in Hampton, Va., where she met her first husband, Lynwood Gregory; and had two children, Lyn and Margaret. With her second husband, Hedley Johnson, her family expanded to two stepdaughters and their spouses. During the years that followed, she was able to travel the world and all the states but two. She loved spending time with her sisters and brothers in Danville and together as a family, camped, went square dancing and did lots of crafts. She loved the Rural Retreat in Danville that she and Hedley created and enjoyed many family reunions sitting by the bonfire. Being involved in church life was always important to her. Buckroe Baptist was her church home until she relocated to Richmond, Va. in 2005. She then became a member of Winfree Memorial Baptist Church. She leaves behind her immediate family, daughter, Margaret "Margo" Chaffin; son, Lyn (Becky) Gregory; grandsons, Kevin (Laura) Gregory and Kris (Allison) Gregory; and extended family. The internment will be private due to health considerations.
