2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!

Thanksgiving Maskers circa 1910
Thanksgiving Maskers circa 1910
Thanksgiving maskers were children who dressed up on the last Thursday of November and begged for fruit and money. (This was before Halloween was celebrated.) There was a large uproar about this practice - newspapers denounced parents who allowed their children to follow this "hooligan" practice. These children look like they were having fun!

Lilly and Sol Baum
Lilly and Sol Baum
This is a photo of my dad, Sol Baum, age 10, with his older half-sister, Lilly Baum Broza, daughter of his mother (my grandmother) and her first husband. Lilly was born in Austria, I believe, and was left there with HER grandmother for a few years, while her mother (my grandmother, Fannie Apfelbaum), came to New York. There, Fannie met and married my grandfather Abraham (who also had been married before), They had one daughter, named after my great-grandmother, Devora. This little girl, Deborah, died at a young age. My middle name, Diane, is to honor her. (As her name, Deborah, was to honor Devora). My father was born a few years after Deborah died.
