My mother, who was born in 1930 and passed away in 2017, was born on this day. This picture is of her and her grandmother (born 1882). It makes me think of how many generations I have personally known - from great-grandparents born in the last quarter of the 1800s to those born in the 21st century (my grandson, just 1 year old). Amazing - I've mingled with people who were born over the span of 150 yrs! How about you? (And Happy Birthday mom!!)

The only grandparent I knew was my paternal grandfather. He was born in 1874. He died when I was 14. My paternal grandmother died when I was a year old, so she knew me, but I didn't know her.

Both my maternal grandparents died long before I was born. My parents were in their 40's when I was born, so I was the third youngest of the cousins on my father's side and the youngest of the cousins on my mother's side.

There's no way I could have known my great-grandparents. My mother's parents came from Poland, and my father's parents (and my father) came from Italy. Once here in America, my grandparents never saw their parents and families again. Immigrants sacrificed much more than some people think in order to give their future children and grandchildren what they never had.

My youngest grandchild was born in 2013. So that makes a span of 139 years for the people I had and have in my life.

Ree Young Covering 139 years - pretty respectable! My grandparents (on both sides) and parents were pretty young when they married and had children so the generations weren't very far apart. Now you get to me - I was 31 when my son was born. And he was 40 when his son was born. So, unfortunately, my son only knew 1 great-grandparent and his son probably won't know any - maybe one.

AncientFaces I've done a lot of work looking into my ancestors and telling my sons the stories my parents told me. One of the most amazing things I found was online...a portrait painted of my paternal grandfather's uncle, a Jesuit priest who was an astronomer at the Vatican. My oldest son is the spitting image of the man who was his great-great-great uncle!

Father Francesco was born in 1804 and died in 1848. It's amazing because the lineage is not a direct descent, like grandfather to father to son. It's such a striking resemblance through an uncle. The way genetics work is fascinating.

I know what you mean: While it is a direct line, my great-grandfather, grandfather, uncle, and cousin (uncle's son) are the spitting image of each other. Really - you can't tell them apart except from the clothing. Altho I haven't seen anyone on that side of the family who is similar!

I was born in 1947. I knew my mother's maternal grandfather. He was born 1876-1878. He lived to nearly 100. My grandmother was born 1905...she lived to 97. I really knew none of Mom's dad's family. My dad's parents both lived past 90 and his maternal grandmother, born in 1886 lived until I was five and I remember her well. Dad's mother told us we were descended from William Bradford...we doubted it was true but she was right...what wasn't known was Dad's father was descended from Edward Doty and it had been lost to his descendants...I tied that one up. What really surprised me were the numbers of Quakers (Society of Friends) in our history...several branches of my roots. My husband's maternal grandmother was born in South Dakota where she remembered Sioux Indians walking in their dwelling and sharing a meal. She lived until I married into the family.

Treasured memories. And look at their resemblance, so sweet.
I'm kinda of curious. We're any taskers living in Montcalm Michigan ? Because I have some Taskers that way. One is a Sue Tasker??

No, sorry Lori. My part of the family originated in Wales and emigrated to the US first, for a couple of years in South Dakota and then in Washington state for decades.

From watching genealogy shows, I understand there were Taskers who lived in the South US who held enslaved peoples so there are tons of Taskers in the US

Mary Ann (Jones) Tasker
I called my great-grandmother "Grandma Tasker" and I have strong memories of her even though she died when I was 6 years old. To give you a sense of her: When I watched a tv show about "the manners of Downton Abbey", everything they talked about - the "proper" way of doing things = reminded me of Grandma Tasker. She was a "proper lady" even though she wasn't of the upper class. Grandma Tasker was born in Mountain Ash Wales. Her mother had been married previously and had children from that marriage. When her husband died, she married a younger man - Grandma's father, Davy Jones. (Yes, that's such a common name in Wales! Not only that, but the descendants of his second marriage insist that he was called David. I bet because he was older when he married the 2nd time). When my sister and I visited Mountain Ash (the year before Covid), we visited the house she was born in. A row house that was most probably for coal miners - Grandma's mother's first husband was a coal miner, as was Davy. When Grandma's mother died, her father, Davy, married again and started a new family. As I understand it, Grandma Tasker didn't get along with her step-mother. So she first became a "domestic" but that didn't suit her. So she "went to London to live with the Sisters". I put that in quotes because that's what her daughter (my grandmother) told me. I always thought that meant that she lived in a convent with nuns. Nope. Remember, this is jolly old England (and Wales). It meant she moved to London to work with nurses. And somewhere along the line, she ran into my great-grandfather, William Tasker. (We think that they may have met through a cousin.) Scandal alert: They married around early 1906 when Grandma Tasker was several months pregnant with their first child, Uncle Bill. (I never met him because he died before I was born, as did Grandpa Tasker. The reason for their late marriage may have been that Grandpa Tasker was at sea until then.) They had 3 children in total (my grandmother was the middle child, born in 1908). When grandma was around 5, the family emigrated to the US. They first lived in South Dakota and then moved to Seattle WA (West Seattle), where they lived for decades and where both William (father) and Bill or Willie (son) both died in the early 1930s. The 2 girls, Connie and Ethel, lived long and full lives. When Connie lived in Bremerton, WA, Grandma Tasker lived with them and took the ferry to Seattle where she worked as a store clerk. Later in life, she lived in Piedmont, CA and we visited her there. When she became ill, she moved to Idaho where she lived with her youngest daughter, Ethel, and she died there.

Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch
Joyce Vandever (as she was known in her later years) was a loving mother of two daughters Kathleen Rae (Kroetch) Pinna & Pam (Kroetch) Marks who she had with Frank Kroetch, and grandma to two grandchildren Daniel J Pinna & Layne. Joyce had a half-sister, Lois (Benning) Ewen, the product of her father's first marriage. She also had a step-brother, Charles Henry Barrett Jr., from her mother's second marriage to Charles Henry 'Heinie' Barrett Sr. She had many friends and relatives in California, Washington state, England and Wales. Her best childhood and lifelong closest friend was Beverly Clarice (Washington) Scoffone in Monte Sereno California. Joyce loved being a grandmother and spent countless weekends with her grandchildren. She lived in the California Hawaiian mobile home park at 3637 Snell Ave in San Jose for many years when it was an adult community. To hear Joyce describe herself see Joyce Vandever In Her Own Words

I am researching Tasker, Jones, Bowen, Rees of Wales; Kroetch, Chartrand of Canada; and Boggs, Ferguson, Smith, of West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. Also Steeples of Kansas. And on my mother's New England roots - well, too numerous to name since she descends from Mayflower passengers as well as Dutch East India captains who arrived with their families before the Mayflower landed further north than was planned. :)

For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in Campbell (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our current Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
