Agnes Ruth (Eldridge) Graddick of Americus, Sumter County, Georgia United States was born on December 20, 1918 in Cecilton, Cecil County, MD to Griffith Morgan Eldridge, Sr. and Mamie Adel (McArthur) Eldridge. She had siblings Griffith 'Yank' Morgan Eldridge and James Donald Eldridge. Agnes Graddick died at age 89 years old on February 7, 2008 in Americus, Sumter County, GA.
James Donald Eldridge of Americus, Sumter County, Georgia United States was born on January 22, 1915 in Americus to Griffith Morgan Eldridge, Sr. and Mamie Adel (McArthur) Eldridge. He had siblings Griffith 'Yank' Morgan Eldridge and Agnes Ruth Eldridge. James Eldridge died at age 89 years old on June 19, 2004 in Americus.
Mamie Adel McArthur was born on October 16, 1892 to parents James Oliver "Mac" McArthur Sr (1860-1911) and Beulah Benton Pounds McArthur (1870-1959).
Mamie married Griffith Morgan Eldridge Jr. on December 14, 1911, in Sumter, Georgia and together they were blessed with three children: Griffith "Yank" Morgan Eldridge II (1913-1944), James Donald "Big Bub" Eldridge Sr. (1915-2004), and Agnes Ruth "Baby Ruth" Eldridge (1918-2008).
Facing the challenges of early widowhood, Mamie courageously raised her three children on her own during the turbulent times of the Great Depression.
Griffith Morgan Eldridge Sr. of Americus, Sumter County, Georgia United States was born on May 3, 1891 in Americus. He was in a relationship with Mamie Adel (McArthur) Eldridge beginning December 14, 1911 in Sumter County, and they were together until Griffith's death in 1922. Griffith Eldridge had children Griffith 'Yank' Morgan Eldridge, James Donald Eldridge, and Agnes Ruth Eldridge.
Griffith went by his nick name in his home town. He was well known as Yank. Never got the full story of how he aquired this nick name.
Griffith Morgan Eldridge Jr. was born to Griffith Morgan Eldridge Sr. (1891 - 1922) and Mamie Adel McArthur (1892 - 1982). He had siblings James Donald (1915 - 2004) and Agnes Ruth Eldridge (1918 - 2008).
"Yank" was a World War II combatant. He was KIA over Austria. A tail gunner, he stayed on his plane drawing German planes' fire so that the crew members could safely get away. There were also not enough parachutes for him to use one, though at a certain altitude he jumped from the plane, breaking both legs. He was found a year later a mile from a village.
First buried in France during World War II, he was later reburied in Oak Grove Cemetery, Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.
