Gertrude McKray and Verda Scott
Gertrude McKray and Verda Scott
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Gertrude MCKRAY and Verda SCOTT of Bucoda (Washington I believe) who were "Best of Friends". In addition it is noted that Gertrude's brother (believed to be Milton) married Verda's sister (believed to be Hattie). The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with the two young women likely in their teens at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following details regarding this family:

Gertrude May MCKRAY was b. 19 Nov 1889 in Yale, KS to parents Almon Richard MCKRAY (1842-1915) and Ellen Nancy ADAMSON (1847-1928). Gertrude was one of 6 children born to this couple including, Charles J.; Clara Louretta; Milton Elmer; Estella Belle; Nellie Emma; and Gertrude May MCKRAY. Gertrude married John Lewis YANTIS Jr. (1890-1983) and together they had 7 children including, Bernice Ellen Helen; John Lewis; and Richard Almon or Milton or Tower YANTIS. Gertrude died on 8 Dec 1981 and is buried in the Milton-Freewater IOOF Cemetery in Milton-Freewater, OR. The MCKRAY surname was sometimes changed to MCREA or MCCRAY by some family members through time.

Verda Viola SCOTT was b. 1890 and married Conrad O. MANNES (1885-1953) on 18 Jun 1911 with Verda’s hometown noted as Elma, WA and Conrad’s as Minneapolis, MN. They had a son, Conrad Peter MANNES. Verda was married a second time to Mr. NIELSEN and she died in 1978 and is buried in the Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home Cemetery in Lake Forest Park, WA. Verda’s sister was Hattie SCOTT (b. abt 1875 in Illinois) and she married Milton MCKRAY (b. 22 Dec 1872 in Girard, KS – d. 3 Jun 1949 in Hoquiam, WA) and together they had a son, Elmer M. A photo of Frank Kroetch and grandson Daniel Pinna. The Missouri is on the right, a destroyer on the left. My father (Frank Kroetch) carrying my son (Daniel Pinna) when he was about 2 1/2 yrs old. My Dad was on a destroyer in WW2 (the Killen) and I love the generational/history feeling of this photo.

The Missouri was in Bremerton Washington when this was taken - where my mother grew up and where the Killen was first commissioned. My father was a plankholder, being on the Killen from commissioning to decommissioning in San Diego.

Clara (Shaw) Whitfield
Clara (Shaw) Whitfield
I've "rescued" three photographs which belong to the SHAW Family of Washington State. The first two are of Clara Helen SHAW WHITFIELD with both taken at the French Studio in Tacoma, WA sometime in the early 1890's with Clara likely about 3 years old at the time. The third photograph is of Clara Helen SHAW, Loren Ransome SHAW, and Henry George SHAW and was taken at the Mitchell Studio in Puyallup, WA. This one was also taken in the 1890's with the three children appearing to be about 2-6 years old at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family:

Clara SHAW was b. 1890 and married Mr. WHITFIELD and d. 1971 and is buried in the Wright Crematory and Columbarium in Seattle, WA. Henry G. SHAW was b. 1891 and d. 1915 and is also buried along with his sister in Seattle, WA. Loren Ransome SHAW Jr. was b. 16 Jul 1888 in Washington and married Agnes Mae BODIN on 9 May 1917 in Snohomish Co. WA and he died on 13 Jul 1935 in Seattle, WA and is buried along with his siblings in Seattle, WA. Loren Ransome SHAW Jr. also appears to have been married to Emily B. LANGILL (b. 1895) but the information is confusing since his death notice lists his wife as Agnes but the last census has his wife as Emily B. – are these the same women?

All the children were born to Loren Ransome SHAW II (b. 1862 in Muskegon, MI to parents Loren R. SHAW I and Helen T. SOULE) and Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” SCLYTHE (b. 1872). Their father Loren Ransome SHAW II had only one full sibling, a sister named Carrie V. SHAW (1862-1926), after his Mother’s death his father remarried and had 3 additional children including, Nellie; Dora Lulu; and Don Jerome SHAW, all born between 1868 and 1886). Loren Ransome SHAW II died 25 Sept 1938 in Seattle, WA

Louisa Reeves
Louisa Reeves
I've "rescued" two old photographs of Louise REEVES b. 1893 which were both taken at the Pratt Studio in Aurora, IL in the 1890's. Louise is just an infant when the first photograph was taken and appears to be about 3 years old in the second photograph. A third photograph taken at the same studio in the 1890’s appears to have the name “Marjorie” written on the back, so I’m thinking this may be Louise’s older sister. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Louise and her family:

Louisa REEVES was b. 8 May 1893 in Aurora, IL and her sister Marjorie REEVES was b. 24 Aug 1890 in Illinois, both to parents William Titsworth REEVES (b. 29 Oct 1856 in Aurora, IL-d. 1938) and Theodosa or Theodosia Gould RUGGLES (b. 8 Feb 1856 in Essex, NY or Boston, MA-d. 13 Sept 1946 in Oshkosh, WI). The two girls had three siblings including, Helen; Allan Gould; and George REEVES all born between 1884 and 1895 in Aurora, IL. The youngest George died in the same year that he was born, 1895. Louisa died 13 Aug 1901 and is buried in the Spring Lake Cemetery in Aurora, IL.

It doesn’t appear that Louisa ever married. Marjorie married Lawrence EKVALL (b. 1890) and together they had three children including, Allan Thomas; and Dorothy EKVALL along with one other. Marjorie died in May 1976 in Highland, IN. It appears that there was another sibling, a brother Charles C. REEVES b. 1919 in Ohio and died 2013 in Florida. Charles and his wife had two daughters identified in obits as, Carol HESS of Clearwater, FL and Jeanine REEVES of Lafayette, CO.

Census records provide the following details:

1900 census of Aurora, IL:

Dr. W. T. REEVES, age 44, born Oct 1855, married 19 years, born IL, parents born NJ, a Dentist
Theo G. REEVES, wife, age 44, born Feb 1856, married 19 years, 5 children/4 living, born NY, parents born VT/NY
Helen REEVES, dau, age 15, born Sept 1884, born IL, at School
Allen G. REEVES, son, age 12, born May 1888, born IL, at School
Marjorie REEVES, dau, age 9, born Aug 1890, born IL, at School
Louisa REEVES, dau, age 7, born May 1893, born IL, at School
Louisa G. RUGGLES, mother-in-law, age 73, born Feb 1827, a widow, 1 child/1 living, born NY, parents born NY

John and Will Lunsman
I've "rescued" an old photograph of John and Will LUNSMAN which was taken at the Remillard Studio in Newburgh, NY. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the two young boys likely about 6-8 years old at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research and thanks to a SMITH Family Researcher I was able to gather the following information regarding this family:

William Henry LUNSMAN was b. 18 Sept 1874 and his brother John B. LUNSMAN was b. 22 Nov 1876, both were born in Cornwall, NY to parents John Daniel or Daniel John “Dan” LUNSMAN (b. Jan 1845 in New York) and Mary “May” A. EMSLIE (b. Jun 1846 in New York, NY to parents James EMSLIE Sr. and Jane WESTON-d. 1911). The couple had a third child, Janie LUNSMAN. John married Nellie May SMITH (b. 1876 in Long Island, NY to parents Orlando Gardiner SMITH and Mary Rebecca BLYDENBURGH) in 1900 and they had a daughter, Gladys M. LUNSMAN (b. 1903 in Cornwall, NY-d. 18 Sept 2003 in Pompano Beach, FL) who later married Thomas Graham TAYLOR in 1949, though it appears that they did not have any children.

William married Caroline LUNSMAN (b. 1877) and they had two children, Daniel J. (b. 28 Jul 1911-d. 27 Aug 1987 in Volusia Co. FL) and Willis Lent (b. 15 Jun 1913-d. 11 May 1979 in Fort Pierce, FL) LUNSMAN. William’s son Daniel married Florence V. REARDON (b. 18 Oct 1909 – d. 15 Jul 2001) in 1936 and it appears the couple may not have had any children. William’s son Willis is indicated as married after 1940 but there is no information on children in family records.

Census records provide the following details:

1880 census of Cornwall, NY:

James D. EMSLIE, age 60, a Baker, born Scotland, parents born Scotland
Jane EMSLIE, wife, age 60, Keeping House, born England, parents born England
Richard EMSLIE, son, age 22, Journeyman Baker, born NY
May LUNSMAN, dau, age 32, At Home, born NY
William H. LUNSMAN, grandson, age 5, at School, born NY, parents born NY
John B. LUNSMAN, grandson, age 3, born NY, parents born NY

1900 census of Cornwall, NY:

Mary LUNSMAN, wife, age 53, born Jun 1846, married 28 years, 3 children/2 living, born NY, parents born Scotland/England
William LUNSMAN, son, age 26, born Sept 1873, born NY, a Farmer
John LUNSMAN, son, age 24, born Mar 1875, born NY, a Carpenter

Dorothea Lynde Dix
A photo of Dorothea Lynde Dix. Daughter of Joseph Dix and Mary Bigelow, she was born on April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine. In 1821, Dorothea opened a school in Boston for wealthy families but she also taught poor children in their homes. She had recurring heath issues that eventually led to her touring Europe for "rest and relaxation." While in Europe, she became interested in working on equal rights for the mentally ill and when she returned to the U.S., she brought her interests with her. In Massachusetts and New Jersey, she worked tirelessly for reforms in the treatment of the mentally ill and was instrumental in creating a state facility in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Her lobbying and efforts led to hospitals being established for the mentally ill in the U.S. and Canada and also led to international reforms.

During the Civil War, she was appointed Superintendent of Army Nurses by the Union Army, setting guidelines for army nurses (volunteers were to be aged 35 to 50 and plain-looking - making them unattractive to the soldiers!). She is best remembered for her insistence on equal care for both Union and Confederate soldiers.

After the Civil War, she returned to crusading for improving the care of prisoners, the disabled, and the mentally ill. While she was an invalid (due to contracting malaria) towards the end of her life, Dorothea never gave up fighting for the rights of these often marginalized groups.
