Inez Milholland Boissevain
Inez Milholland Boissevain
A photo of Inez Milholland Boissevain. Lawyer, pacifist, feminist, suffragette, and national face of the women's movement, she married a Dutchman - she proposed to him! - and lost her American citizenship. (Women had to take the man's citizenship.)

Despite suffering from pernicious anemia and over the protests of her family, she embarked on a speaking tour for women's rights in 1916. She collapsed on stage in Los Angeles and died about a month later in a local hospital. She was 30 years old.

Her last public words were "Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?"

I’ve “rescued” an old photograph identified as that of Dorothy CURTIS at age 4 years. The photograph was taken at the Riel Studio in Chicago, IL most likely in the early 1900’s. I’m hoping to locate someone from Dorothy’s family so that this beautiful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this CURTIS Family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

Thanks,
Shelley

A photo of Alfred and Alice Olson rescued from an antique shop in Hillsboro, Oregon, October 2018. Alfred and Alice. Back also states "to Leona from Mrs. Olson" - so names are probably Alfred and Alice Olson.

Puritan Woman
Puritan Woman
A photo, done in the early 1900's, of a woman dressed as a Puritan, holding a book.

Is there a difference between Pilgrims and Puritans? Yes - many. The Pilgrims - who first came to North America on the Mayflower in 1620, after having spent some time in the Netherlands - had separated from the Church of England and were called "Separatists" because of it. They were establishing their own "pure" religion, following the tenets of John Calvin.

The Puritans remained within the Church of England but were trying to rid the Church of any Roman Catholic remnants within it. They were Calvinists, as were the Pilgrims, but after conceding that changes weren't possible, many left England in 1630 and migrated to the Massachusetts area - many others followed and a decade later there were almost 20,000 Puritans in the area.

The original Pilgrims were more tolerant of others - including Native Americans - but the overwhelming numbers of Puritans held sway. They "believed in their God-given superiority". So when we celebrate Thanksgiving, we are celebrating the Pilgrims, not the Puritans.

Ada Wilson Dundas
Ada Wilson Dundas
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph identified as Ada Wilson DUNDAS which was taken at the Bollow’s Art Studio in Osborne, KS. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900’s with Ada likely in her 20’s at the time. I don’t know if “Wilson” is a middle name (maybe her Mother’s maiden name) or her own maiden name. I’m hoping to locate someone from her family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

Thanks,
Shelley
