Tragic Smith Family
Tragic Smith Family
A photo of Columbus Edward Smith and his children with Minerva (Pool) Smith. Minerva was milking a cow in 1906 at her farm in the Packsaddle community in Scott County, AR. The cow was easily scared and was skittish. Minerva climbed into the loft to throw down some hay to busy the spooked cow.
She evidently lost her footing and fell into the stall where the cow was tied. She was kicked repeatedly. The cow tore up the barn, stomping the milk bucket almost unrecognizable.
She made her way into the house but never regained true consciousness and died of a brain hemorrhage two weeks later at the age of 24.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

2nd Great Uncle Samuel Atkinson
Samuel Wilmer Atkinson Has anyone seen this picture? Is this Samuel? I finally confirmed this is a picture of my 2nd Great-Uncle Samuel. This picture looks like a Wedding photo. If this is Samuel, then I probably have a picture his first wife Elizabeth Celia Mulheron. Samuel is a brother to Joseph. M. Atkinson.

Found in an antique store in central Texas. They're a long way from home. According to census records, they lived in western Pennsylvania and New York. There's nothing written on the photo other than their names on the back, so I don't know where this was taken.

Richard Crow
Richard Crow died with his brother A. B. (Brant) Crow on July 19th 1915 when a train struck and killed them. An article reads: Killed by Train. Fragments of flesh and bones representing less than half of the bodies of A.B. (Brant) Crow, aged 32, and his young brother Richard Crow, 17, who resided at Sellmeyer spur, on the Helena branch railroad, 4 miles south of Knobel, were found scattered for a great distance along the railroad track from a point about 2 miles south of Knobel where northbound passenger train No. 10 struck the unfortunates just before midnight last Saturday. Small parts of their bodies were found on the locomotive after that train arrived at Poplar Bluff Sunday morning. All that could be gathered of their remains, collected by friends and citizens, and placed in a small box, was brought to Knobel Sunday morning where Esq. C. B. Cox, acting coroner, empanelled a jury and held an inquest, whose verdict accorded with these statements. The Crow brothers were last seen alive as they left Knobel for their home Saturday evening about 7 o' clock with a jug of whiskey. The elder Crow leaves a widow and three children. The young men were sons of Parson Crow, a Baptist minister.
