Penny Marshall & Rob Reiner, 1971
A photo of the backyard wedding of Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner in 1971.
The daughter of Marjorie Marshall, a tap dance teacher, and Tony Marshall, a film director and producer, and the sister of Garry Marshall (her sister was a casting director and producer), it's not surprising that Penny entered the entertainment industry as well. She was a actress (probably best known for the series "Laverne and Shirley), director, and producer. She brought us years of laughter in her productions.
She married Rob Reiner in 1971 (himself a well known entertainer and the son of Carl Reiner) and they were married for a decade. A previous marriage resulted in a daughter, Tracy (who is also an actor), and Rob adopted her.
Penny died of complications from diabetes on December 18, 2018 in Los Angeles CA - a continent away from her birthplace, The Bronx, New York City.

Mary Ashby, Illinois
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Miss Mary ASHBY of Lewistown, IL. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Mary likely about 2-3 years old at the time. In addition to her name, someone has written "Baby of the ASHBY'S" and "it was at their house I got my head in the bowl of chicken gravy" and "her brothers were Lemuel and Bruce" and "they are our cousins" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Mary and her family:
Mary Edith ASHBY was b. 16 Mar 1891 in Liverpool, IL to parents Asbury Fulton ASHBY (1849-1929 son of William Asbury ASHBY and Hannah SHELTON) and Catherine “Cassie” Elizabeth ARENDS (1864 or 1866-1937). Mary was one of 7 children born to this couple including, Mary Edith; Alfred; Anna Priscilla; John Hobart or Hobert; Sylvia; and Hazel Angeline ASHBY, all born between 1891 and 1903. Four additional children were born to her father in a previous marriage, they include, William Bruce; Frederic; Fielding Edgar; and Lemuel Asbury ASHBY, all born between 1876 and 1879. Mary married Samuel Calvin “Saul” CLARK (1888-1970) and they had 7 children including, Roy Clifford; Clarence Edward; Harry Dean; Leslie Alvin; and Marvin W. CLARK along with two others all born between 1912 and 1930.
Mary ASHBY CLARK died 14 Mar 1968 in Cuba, IL and is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Lewistown, IL.
Census records provide the following details:
1900 census of Liverpool, IL:
Asbury ASHBY, age 50, born Dec 1849, married 9 years, born IL, parents born NC/KY, a Farmer
Catharine ASHBY, wife, age 34, born Mar 1866, married 9 years, 3 children/3 living, born IL, parents born Germany/MO

Anna ASHBY, dau, age 5, born Dec 1894, born IL
John H. ASHBY, son, age 3, born Apr 1897, born IL
+ 1 Boarder

Catherine E. ASHBY, wife, age 44, 1st marriage 20 years, 4 children/4 living, born IL, parents born Germany/IL

Anna P. ASHBY, dau, age 16, born IL
John H. ASHBY, son, age 12, born IL

Samuel Erhart Drawing, Santa Claus, 1913
A drawing by Samuel Erhart of Santa Claus on Wall Street, for Puck Magazine,1913.
The caption says "Chorus of Bankers and Brokers: Just say Christmas to us this year, that's all! We dare you!" The drawing shows a mob of bankers, brokers, and financiers yelling at Santa Claus. Santa is hanging off of a statue of George Washington which is standing outside of Federal Hall in Manhattan, New York.
Here we are, 100 years later, and this satirical drawing could have been done today.
Courtesy of the Library of Congress, Samuel D. Erhart, artist.
A little history: In the Spring of 1913, the 16th Amendment had been passed, establishing a permanent Federal Income Tax. In the Fall, the push for a Federal Reserve began in earnest. Wall Street and banks said that a Federal Reserve would be bad, but several Congress members pointed out that this was a position that was publicly taken to get the Reserve established: "You allowed the special interests by pretended dissatisfaction with the measure to bring about a sham battle, and the sham battle was for the purpose of diverting you people from the real remedy, and they diverted you. The Wall Street bluff has worked."
Here is how Puck - a political magazine of the time - showed the battle. Wall Street won and the Reserve became law after the President signed a bill from Congress on December 23rd, 1913. Wall Street and bankers got their Christmas gift from Santa.
