Elizabeth Keckley- dressmaker to Mary Todd Lincoln. She was born into slavery and became a successful seamstress, civil activist, author and dressmaker to the First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln.

The Statue of Liberty was conceived in 1876 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Revolution. She faces East, greeting incoming ships while also looking back toward her birthplace in France. Nearly a quarter-of-a-million onlookers lined Battery Park, while hundreds of boats pulled into the harbor to welcome the Isère when she arrived with the statue.

President Grover Cleveland, a former New York governor, dedicated the statue on Oct. 28, 1886, before tens of thousands of spectators.

While the Indianapolis Motor Speedway complex was built in 1909, the first 500-mile race took place here on May 29, 1911. This annual race is traditionally held on the last weekend in May (Memorial Day).

Ray Harroun of Spartansburg, Pennsylvania won the inaugural Indianapolis 500-mile race in 6 hours, 42 minutes and 8 seconds averaging 74.59 MPH. The Indianapolis 500 purse amounted to $27,550, of which Harroun earned $14,000.

A year before the race, he accepted a job in 1910 as an engineer for the Marmon Motor Car company. Though he had been building cars since 1905 at the age of 26.

Harroun designed the six-cylinder Marmon Wasp from stock Marmon engine components. Most cars during this time were only two-cylinder units. It was Mr. Ray Harroun's rear view mirror invention that allowed him to drive without a riding mechanic to watch for cars behind. He also created the Wasp to be streamlined, with only one seat.

The name of the winning car was the Marmon Wasp; Aptly named for its yellow and black exterior.

In 1961, 50 years after the Indy 500 debut, Harroun came out of retirement and drove an anniversary lap in the Wasp. The Wasp remains on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

He later died on January 19, 1968 in Anderson, Indiana.

Found in a Texas antique store with other photos of the Ashenden family of Massachusetts. Mable Gates and Mollie Tallie or Lallie. Probably friends of Eva Ashenden. This snapshot was taken during the same visit as the larger group snapshot. Mollie is visible on the far left of the larger group photo.

Photo of Emma Andy and her daughter, Juanita June Mesplie, taken in Toppenish, Washington. Emma Andy was born in 1912 (daughter of Nora Waters) and married Floyd Arthur Mesplie (born January 9, 1913) in Toppenish. Their daughter, Juanita June Mesplie was born June 25, 1935.
Juanita married Floyd Brown in the 1950's. Juanita died November 7, 2007 in Toppenish, Washington.

This is a photo of Quentin Roosevelt and Roswell Newcomb Pinckney as children added by Ancient Faces on January 9, 2012.

Quentin was the son of Teddy Roosevelt and he and Roswell were part of the "White House Gang" - boys who played together in the White House. Quentin died in WWI. Roswell lived until 1981 and worked for many years in the State Dept.
